Scientific Breakthrough Could Lead to Preventive Therapies for Stress

Brain_2A recent cutting-edge study shows a significant association between chemical structure of brain and acute psychological health issues. As per a group of scientists at the School of Leicester in the UK, neuropsin, a brain enzyme in human brains promotes stress and may be associated with stress-related psychological disorders.

Responding to this study, Dr. John Pawlak, also from Leicester, led a team of scientists that managed to unveil the secret the role of amygdale, epicenter of mind, in unleashing an abrupt response in people when they are bombarded by an emotional catalyst.

Normalizing brain function is pivotal in the prevention and treatment of stress and stress related illness. One of the possibilities to manage brain function and specifically the working of the amygdala is hypnosis.  Research performed on the brain shows that hypnosis gives an individual the ability to control the amygdala by encouraging the mind-body connections of this area of the brain.

When someone is in a state of hypnotic trance the amygdala normally shuts itself off. Both our body and the brain are in a deep relaxation. All feelings of concern are turned off.  This creates the window for bio-regulation in which with the help of a skilled hypnotherapist, the person’s unconscious mind is able to leverage the stabilizing and healing power of “targeted hypnotic suggestions” to correct behavioral patterns that encourage stress.

How You Can Boost Your Brain’s Willpower with a Simple Working Memory Exercise By Adam Dachis

BrainSome say your willpower is limited and others believe it is as strong as you think it is. Regardless of how much you have, it turns out that you may be able to boost it with a simple brain training exercise.

It all comes down to the strength of your working memory, which sits in your prefrontal cortex and is tied to executive control. What’s that? A cluster of abilities that include paying attention, planning, remembering things, and your ability to perform and inhibit actions.

Dr. Sian Beilock, writing for Psychology Today, points to a recent study in the journal Psychological Science that discovered how working memory plays a large role in the strength of your executive control. This study took two group of heavier drinkers (30-ish drinks per week) and performed a few tests. The first group—the treatment group—performed working memory exercises. For example, they saw letters on the screen in a given order and were told to remember them. When the sequence of letters completed, they were tasked to remember those letters in reverse order. These tests became increasingly more challenging. The placebo group had similar tests, but they were consistent and easier. Unsurprisingly, the treatment group is the one that improved:

“These folks also improved on other executive control tasks that they had not practiced. Even more impressive, people in the treatment group reduced their alcohol intake by about 10 glasses a week compared to what they drank before the study (with the biggest reductions for those with the strongest impulses to drink alcohol). People in the placebo group did not show a change in their drinking behavior.”

What this means in the long-term is still unknown, but in the meantime can borrow the simple working memory exercise from this study and do it on your own. Doing it with some regularity, and with increasing difficulty, you may be able to improve your working memory and, therefore, executive control.

Are You a Manager or a Leader?

There is considerable discussion about the differences and similitude between Management and Leadership roles. Whether good Managers can be good Leaders and whether great Leaders are born or is it a quality that can be developed with the right training.

Regardless of your inclination, you will find that some of the competencies necessary to excel in either role are interchangeable: they both involve goal/task management, a degree of authority and power and influencing others within and outside the organization.  Managers operate under a Leadership and Leaders must understand the “short-term” challenges faced by Managers in order to motivate and lead them into a “long-term” strategy, which often implies change.

Both positions need to master technical skills, human skills and conceptual skills. Nonetheless, the intensity and frequency in which each these skills are used is essentially different in the process of Leadership vs. Management.

A Manager’s focus is typically goal oriented, seeking a degree of order and consistency while a Leader’s focus is more process oriented and tends to seek change and movement to develop the organization beyond its own limits to either reach full potential or transform or re-invent itself.

An individual can be a fantastic Leader, a great Manager and in some occasions, even both; however one thing is clear each process requires mastering slightly different skills and competencies. Navigating the fields of both Man­agement and Leadership is usually just as simple as knowing what context is most appropriate to the situ­ation and applying oneself in a leadership or manage­ment capacity. The basic difference is that a Leader needs to create and communicate visions for change while inspiring others and maintaining long-term focus.

Growing into a Leadership role requires among other things flexibility and the ability to broaden your focus beyond the standard. With the proper guidance and a good dose of perseverance, these qualities can be acquired.
